MORE FOOD SOURCED LOCALLY
An increased population and GDP results in, increased need for food, especially protein. The livestock industry is one of the fastest growing industries in Africa. By 2050, 34.8 million tonnes of meat will be produced in Africa, but the feed market is lagging behind and is in need of creative solutions.
By introducing out products farmers will have a sustainable, local, nutritious and affordable alternative protein source to feed their animals. Resulting in higher quality meat and reduction of costs.THE CHALLENGES
High Feed Ingredients Prices
When breaking feed costs down into its components, 60% of the total costs are because of the protein component in animal feed (Kimuge, 2019). Protein is the most expensive component in poultry feed, and amino acid composition remains a limiting factor for optimum performance.
Adultration Of Ingredients
For most local farmers, the Kenyan feed market is extremely difficult to purchase high quality inputs. Feed adulteration through mixing with sand, saw dust and feathers is common as well as false labelling of the feed nutritional composition is very high.
Accesibility
The potential annual production of animal feed in Kenya is about 1,126,656 tonnes, and the manufacturers are only able to access two thirds (69%) due to lack of raw materials and high prices. Kenya imports over 70% of the raw materials needed for manufacturing animal feed.
SOLUTION
HOW DO WE SOLVE IT?
The black soldier fly is able to generate nutrition for the animal feed industry (protein and fat) which allows us to:
- Provide High quality at a low price
- Provide a consistent and competitive price throughout the year for feed millers
- Provide a local protein source reducing transport costs
- Provide a safe and 100% pure protein source
IN 1 YEAR A SINGLE ACRE OF BLACK SOLDIER FLY CAN PRODUCE MORE PROTEIN THAN 130 ACRES OF SOY.COMPARISON: BSF VS OMENA/SOY
COMPETITION WITH HUMAN CONSUMPTION: | • BSF has no competition | •Both omena and soy are used for human consumption as well. |
PRODUCTION & PRICE STABILITY: | • BSF is produced locally and therefore more price stable | •Soy is mostly imported and therefore relying on fuel prices etc. |
QUALITY OF PRODUCT: | • BSF is produced at an industrial level and is KEBS qualified | •Omena faces a lot of adulteration within the industry. |
LAND EFFICIENCY: | • More protein produced per acre (130x more than soy in 1 year) | •Less protein production per acre |
